Today is March 15th, 2015 and boy, was it nice to be in the N. Y. C!
The sun was shining and our group took on the city as if it were our own.
We started our day off at Washington Square Park, and indulged in some city selfies and snapchat geo filters, while a man played beautiful pieces from his piano. Soon we were off again on our adventure, enjoying the sceneries in Manhattan. Things escalated quickly (in a good way, of course) once we reached SoHo and entered American Apparel and stumbled upon, possibly, the most amazing deals ever! We continued to explore the neighborhood, entering trendy shops and encountering even more trendy New York natives.
We knew our day in the city would not be complete if we did not stop by the 9/11 Memorial and pay respect to the men, women, and children who died on September 11th 2001. The ambiance at the memorial was one of compassion and true admiration of how much our country was able to unite after such a disastrous set of events. I am glad to have experienced that sense of subtle love and honor with the rest of my AB group. I believe it help set the tone for the rest of our trip.
Our next stop in the city was to Brooklyn Heights. First we stopped at a cute local thrift shop and then headed down the block for a beautiful view of the Brooklyn Bridge. What was even more amazing was the site of the Statue of Liberty in the far off distance. We definitely took advantage of the perfect photo op with selfies and group photos.
We weren't done with Brooklyn just yet, at least not the shopping aspect. So we stopped by another consignment shop a few blocks away. Once we had our shopping fix for the day, we headed home to our quaint getaway in Queens.
The day was a long one, but yet we cannot seem to get enough of each other. From talking about life long goals to preparing dinner together, our bond as a group has really gotten stronger over the past 24 hours. I am excited for us to start our service in the community tomorrow. We are ready to give of ourself to the community as well as learn from the experiences of others!
Signing off, with love from the greatest city in America,
Idara Akpan <3
